The North Shore Board of Education established the Legislative Action Committee, or LAC, as a Citizen’s Advisory Committee of the Board for the purpose of researching, proposing, and executing approved advocacy approaches to legislative matters that have a direct bearing on fiscal or educational aspects of the North Shore Central School District. LAC is composed of community members with varying interests, experience and expertise. Meetings have been typically on Wednesday nights. LAC communicates with community members via a number of ways including letters, emails, school events, community groups, LAC meetings, and the LAC webpage at www.northshoreschools.org. Past Legislative Actions or Advocacy Efforts
At the direction of the Board, LAC has engaged in communication campaigns with community members and advocacy efforts with state and local representatives regarding the following legislative matters:
Decommissioning of Power Plant
Assisting the North Shore School District with challenges resulting from the decommissioning of the power plant in Glenwood Landing and its impact on our community and schools
Unfunded Mandates
Need for relief from unfunded education mandates given the state imposed cap on the tax levy
Teacher Evaluations
Preserving district control of teacher evaluations
Charter Schools
Establishing criteria to determine the need for creating publicly funded Charter Schools, and the potential financial impact on local school districts
Gap Elimination Adjustment (GEA)
Restoration of state aid funds to school districts that have been diverted to NYS to help them close the budget deficit
Joint Legislative Efforts
The Legislative Action Committees of North Shore, Manhasset and Garden City Public Schools have formed a Legislation Action Coalition to collaborate for greater effectiveness
on issues affecting public education.
2017-18 Legislative Efforts
New laws related to education have recently been enacted with the approved NYS budget. At the direction of the Board, LAC will continue to engage in communication campaigns with our community to ensure that all
are informed about legislative issues having a direct bearing on financial or educational aspects of our public school system. In the upcoming school year, LAC will continue to address teacher evaluations, unfunded mandates, TRS Reserve Funds, State Aide, and Tax Cap modifications.

Legislative Night January 18, 2018
LAC hosted a Legislative Night on Thursday, January 18, 2018, in the Glenwood Landing Theatre from 7-9 PM. State and local legislators were present to discuss issues of concern to our community and schools. (Snow date: February 1st).

Historically, we have reached out to community members to assist with letter writing campaigns to our state and local representatives. We encourage our entire community to stay informed and to join us in our efforts to tackle the important issues facing our school district.

LAC has worked closely with the North Shore Schools Board of Education to send a strong message to the Governor and legislators expressing our opposition of the education agenda attached to this year’s proposed state budget.
