Summary:
The North Shore Middle School Math Department engages in philosophy of teaching and learning that is inspired by the Singapore math approach that North Shore has been using with students from the time they were in elementary school. This approach is rooted in Problem Solving and supported by attentiveness to Attitudes, Skills, Concepts, Processes, and Metacognition.
Our work with students incorporates elements of teaching and learning that are informed by research and considered best practices in mathematics learning. Math lessons typically include an opportunity to explore, followed by an opportunity to structure and make sense of their discoveries. Students will also engage in journaling, reading, and reflection. Finally, students will have the opportunity to practice their new understanding, both in a guided and independent setting and considered best practices in mathematics learning.
