GH Grades 2-5 Compete in Scripps National Spelling Bee Competitions
Throughout the month of January, 150 students in grades 2-5 competed in classroom Spelling Bees under the direction of SWES teacher, Mrs. Janet Goldberg! In accordance with the Scripps National Spelling Bee guidelines, all students who entered classroom spelling bees received grade-level study lists to help them prepare for their classroom bee. First, second, and third place winners of class bees won medals, and all participants were given a ribbon of participation.
The top three winners of the classroom bees moved on to Junior (grades 2 & 3) and Senior (grades 4 & 5) School-wide Spelling Bees. Faculty announcer Mrs. Christine DeAlbuquerque conducted the Junior and Senior Bees using the rules and word lists developed by the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
These exciting bees were held live in front of an audience of their peers!
The winners of the Junior and Senior Bees were awarded spelling bee medals. The student who placed first in the Senior Bee, fourth-grader Lucia Meloni Vazan, earned the title of School Champion and will enter the next level of national competition, which is an online Regional Qualifying Test. Lucia will take the Regional Qualifier on February 6. We wish Lucia the best of luck!
