2025 CLASS NATIONAL K–16 CHINESE PROGAM AWARD
Mandarin Program Recognized as One of the Nation’s Best!
North Shore Schools Mandarin K-12 Program has been awarded the 2025 CLASS (Chinese Language Association of Secondary–Elementary Schools) National K–16 Chinese Program Award. This prestigious national recognition is presented by CLASS, the leading national professional organization for Chinese language educators, to a Chinese language program that demonstrates excellence in curriculum innovation, high quality instruction, outstanding student achievement, meaningful community engagement, and commitment to fostering meaningful intercultural understanding. Only a select group of schools across the country receive this honor each year, making this achievement a true testament to the strength and vision of our Mandarin program. North Shore is proud to be recognized among exemplary programs nationwide.
We could not be prouder of our exceptional Mandarin teachers, whose dedication, talent, and creativity have built one of the most innovative and comprehensive Mandarin programs in the country. We are equally proud of our students, whose curiosity, hard work, and passion for language and culture bring this program to life every day.
This award reflects the collective commitment of our teachers, students, families, administrators, and community partners who believe deeply in the power of global education. Cynthia Li and Wei Huang attended the ACTFL National Conference in New Orleans to accept the award on behalf of North Shore Schools.
“This award reflects the innovation and expertise of our Mandarin teachers, who have built a rigorous and vibrant K–12 program that fosters language proficiency, intercultural competence, and purposeful student voice. Our students engage in Mandarin learning with genuine curiosity and commitment, embodying the ideals of the North Shore Journey as they develop the skills to communicate and engage in an increasingly global world. This recognition is also attributed to the support of our administrators, Board of Education, families, and community, whose partnership has enabled the program to flourish.” - Ana Aguiar-Mady, Director of World Languages & ENL
“My first class of North Shore 6th graders are now Juniors in college. I still keep in touch with them as they continue their Mandarin studies, from university courses to study abroad in China. Their dedication reflects the essence of our program: learning with courage, supporting one another, and building a true community.” - Cynthia Li, MS and HS Mandarin Teacher
“Watching our students grow has been the greatest reward. Many of them continue studying Mandarin even after graduation, which shows how deeply the language and culture have shaped them, Their commitment reflects not only linguistic growth but also broader global awareness and personal development. I'm grateful to the North Shore School District and our dedicated World Language team for creating a learning environment where students can truly shine.” - LiHong (Tracy) Cai, HS Mandarin Teacher
“North Shore School district distinguishes itself by harnessing the spongelike language learning ability of early childhood learners to achieve meaningful and practical fluency. Upon completion of the K-12 Mandarin language learning pipeline, students not only can receive college credits and pass tests, but they can actually use this extremely complex and critical world language to create, communicate and collaborate in the real world.” - David Schultz, SC Mandarin Teacher
“Watching students discover new words, new cultures, and new connections is the most meaningful part of teaching Mandarin for me. This recognition encourages us to continue inspiring our students, one lesson at a time.” - Wei Huang, GWL Mandarin Teacher
“This award is a wonderful affirmation of our belief that language learning helps students to connect with the world. Through amazing teamwork we’ve built a community within our school district that celebrates the journey from elementary school through high school. I am grateful for being part of the community” - Ariel Yang, MS Mandarin Teacher
“North Shore School District is aiming to provide meaningful and authentic learning through real world connections and applications.
