North Shore HS Students Medal at Long Island Math Fair at Hofstra University
14 HS Students Presented and 12 Received Medals
“This year’s math research work was full of originality,” said North Shore High School teacher, Mr. Chuck Wankel. “Works included the creation of hybrid polar equations, composing the mathematics of the physics of figure skating, a twist on the Cevian Problem, using hyperbolic distance to calculate similarity, defining and calculating reflections in curves, modeling the math behind the college admissions calculator, development of a generalized coordinate-geometry rotation formula, finding the optimal racing line for a given car and track, and establishing relationships of the radii of three mutually externally tangent circles and the sides of the triangle with vertices of the points of tangency.”
The following students received medals at the Long Island Math Fair at Hofstra University in April including Brandon Hsieh (Gold), Brynn Paulinski (Bronze), Cecilia Reilly (Silver), Finn Collins (Bronze), Grace Lei (Gold), Luke Pourakis (Bronze), Ruby Brock-Tarkashvand (Silver), Ty Fichtl (Bronze), Ashley Holden (Gold), Seamus Hughes (Honorable Mention), Jasmin Ko (Bronze), Ava Gibstein (Honorable Mention), Harrison Levin (Silver), and Jessica Leonard (Silver).
Principal Eric Contreras stated, “We are proud of all our mathletes during the Nassau County Math tournament. Their achievement among many teams is testament to the work of the entire math department and the hard work of our teachers and students.”
Mr. Wankel concluded by saying, “North Shore students also studied some of math’s most precious gems including RSA codes, a geometric solution to the quadratic equation, calculating lines of best fit and correlation coefficients by hand, celestial calculations, and fractal dimensions. Fourteen high school students presented at the 2024 Long Island Math Fair, taking home twelve medals.”
Congratulations to all! Go Vikings Go!
