Kindergarten Cafes Culminate the Bread Study at GH
To conclude their Bread Study, the kindergarten classes at Glen Head School ran cafes under the direction of their teachers. The decorative cafes had original themes and titles created by the students including the Penguin, the Cheetah Café, The Wise Owl Cafe, and the Huff and Puff Café.
In May 2024, excited parents and family members gathered in the hallways to be eagerly greeted by their “student hosts and hostesses.” The kindergarteners were dressed up in hats and aprons according to their respective cafe theme. Inside the classrooms, desks were arranged as beautiful tables with flowers and decorations to resemble a fabulous cafe with banquet tables filled with homemade delicacies and baked breads. In addition, the students made original sculptures of their various baked goods in their art classes.
The students in each cafe took on the following jobs: bus boys and girls, waiters and waitresses, hosts and hostesses, kitchen workers, samplers, recipe book salespeople, cashiers, money changers and managers. The kindergarteners took their jobs very seriously and worked as a team to serve and please all those in attendance to the delight of all those who gathered to enjoy a delicious breakfast treat!
Kindergarten teacher, Ms. Kirsten Clagnaz said, “Each class was represented by an animal that became part of our bread cafe theme and engaged in a bread study for the past 2 months. Additionally, across the study we grew wheat seeds, made flour from wheat berries, conducted science experiments with yeast, visited a pizzeria, and baked four different breads with parent volunteers. The cafes were the culmination of all that hard work. Next, we will take the earnings from the four cafes and the students will shop for food to donate to the NOSH food pantry that provides relief to residents in need right here in North Shore!”
Many thanks to all of the teachers and parents who helped make baked goods and participate in this interdisciplinary Bread Study.
