North Shore HS Mathletes Compete in Nassau County Mathematics Tournament
North Shore Senior Division Team Placed 13th Out of Over 50 Teams from All Over Nassau County
On Friday, February 3rd, North Shore High School students competed in The Nassau County Math Tournament (NMT). At the competition, students competed in three separate rounds.
HS Principal Eric Contreras said, “We are proud of all our mathletes during the Nassau County Math tournament. Their achievement among many teams is a testament to the work of the entire math department and the hard work of our teachers and students.”
In the individual round, students completed 15 grade-level competition math problems without the use of calculators for over 45 minutes. In the Mathletics round, students completed 10 competition math problems with the use of calculators over 30 minutes. Finally, during the team round, North Shore students competed in teams of five to complete 20 questions with a calculator in 60 minutes.
Mathematics Teacher, Ms. Kristen Nersesian said, “At the competition, we entered three groups of students. Our full senior division team placed 13th out of over 50 teams from all over Nassau County with 107 points scoring getting 19 out of 20 possible questions correct on the team section of the event. Unfortunately, two of our groups were at a disadvantage because they did not have a full group of five students. Additionally, our senior division team consisted of five juniors and only one senior; next year, we hope to perform even better with more seniors on the team. Overall, we really enjoyed getting to talk to math students from other schools and the event was a lot of fun.”
