North Shore High School Students Shine Among Top 300 Regeneron Scholars
Claire Tao and Michelle Yu top contenders in the country’s oldest science competition
Congratulations to Claire Tao and Michelle Yu from North Shore High School who were named today among the top 300 scholars in the 2024 Regeneron Talent Search (STS)! We are so proud of you!
Claire’s science research is titled “TIGIT is Highly Expressed Across Various Types of Immunosuppressive Myeloid Cells Induced by Glioblastoma Extracellular Vesicles” and Michelle’s is called, “Salvia hispanica L. Ameliorates the Effects of Alzheimer’s Disease in Drosophila melanogaster.
Superintendent Dr. Chris Zublionis said, "The entire science department staff and I were immensely proud of Claire and Michelle. This highlighted the school's remarkably strong science program. It is something for the whole department to celebrate. It's the culmination of science learning that they've had, and our goal is to always give our kids more opportunities for research."
"Regeneron is the pre-eminent research competition in the world," stated North Shore High School Principal, Eric Contreras. "To have two North Shore High School semifinalists is very impressive. It speaks to Michelle and Claire’s commitment to science, inquiry, and research." He continued, "Their awards are a celebration of their indefatigable inquiry, the mentorship of Dr. Mordechai, and the collective work of all our science teachers in creating robust, dynamic, and exciting learning experiences in Science. More than ever our country needs innovators, creators, and researchers to expand the boundaries of knowledge, strengthen our security, and improve our lives in big and small ways. We are very proud of Michelle and Claire for moving this work forward."
Science Research Teacher, Dr. Molly Mordechai, Ph.D., said "I am incredibly proud of Claire and Michelle for their outstanding achievement in being recognized as among top 300 Regeneron Science Talent Search Scholars. Their dedication to research exemplifies the spirit of academic excellence at our school. Congratulations to them on the well-deserved honor!"
