GWL Students Brighten the Lives of the Residents of Sunrise Assisted Living Facility
Glenwood Landing first graders recently embarked on a journey of growing empathy for others. Last fall, 5th grade Student Government Representatives surveyed students to determine how the children of Glenwood Landing School could help the world. First graders voted. One of the top choices for the grade level was to help the elderly.
In Schoolwide Enrichment (SWES) classes under the direction of Ms. Audra Marcantonio, GWL students were immersed in better understanding the senior citizen population through rich picture books, read alouds, research, and conversations around helping senior citizens. Students brainstormed ways to support those living in nursing homes, examined why it is important to help the elderly, and turned their ideas into reality. During SWES, students practiced empathy, engaged in conversation starters, and created cards and flower bouquets out of tissue paper.
IIn February 2024, 1st graders and their teachers along with GWL Music teacher, Ms. Curran, and Ms. Marcantonio went on field trips to Sunrise Assisted Living Facility in Glen Cove. Students met in a large group with the residents, sang songs, used question starters to spark conversations, distributed cards and letters that they created, and gave each their beautiful flower bouquet – to everyone's delight!
Thank you to everyone who participated in this endearing community experience.
