73 Students Inducted into Mu Alpha Theta National Honor Society
On Friday, December 13, 2024, 73 North Shore High School students were inducted in the Mu Alpha Theta National Math Honor Society. To be eligible for admission, students must have pursued a rigorous academic program and have taken at least one honors, IB, College Credit or AP class in math during the past year (11th or 12th grade). Additionally, students MUST have participated in the AMC Tournament (or will participate this year). To remain in good standing in Mu Alpha Theta, the students must also maintain an overall average of 90 or higher and 95 or better in math and are required to complete 10 (ten) hours of peer mathematics tutoring annually. Leading the ceremony were Ms. Alessia Merritts (HS Math teacher) and Dr. Kimberly Mattes (Director of K-12 Mathematics). Principal Eric Contreras was also in attendance to say a few words and congratulate his students!

Mu Alpha Theta is a National Honor Society for High School and Two-Year College Mathematics, established in 1957. This society is committed to fostering a strong interest in mathematics, enhancing academic excellence in the field, and encouraging enjoyment of mathematics among high school students. Presently, there are over 100,000 members of Mu Alpha Theta and more than 2,400 institutions across the United States and in 23 other countries.
Dr. Mattes stated, “I would like to extend my congratulations to all the new inductees becoming part of this esteemed organization. Your enthusiasm and commitment to mathematics are truly admirable. Additionally, I would like to express my gratitude to Ms. Merritts for her dedication and efforts in organizing today’s event. I am confident that under her guidance, you will continue to excel in the realm of mathematics.”
