KINDERGARTEN BUTTERFLIES!
GWL Kindergarteners Learn About Butterflies!
Glenwood Landing’s School-Wide Enrichment Services under the direction of Audra Marcantonio conducted an educational program for all kindergarteners involving Butterflies hosted by the Long Island Science Museum.
Children in kindergarten participated in a hands-on learning experience where they discovered the life cycle and anatomy of butterflies. The students studied how caterpillars turn into butterflies after it spins a silky cocoon or molts into a shiny chrysalis. This protective casing enables the caterpillar to radically transform its body, eventually emerging as a butterfly or moth! Additionally, they discovered how butterflies use their own senses to find food.
In a following crafts session, students then had the opportunity to make their own butterflies. They got to pick colorful markers, pipe cleaners, and a white coffee filter which they designed into their own stunning butterflies!
Many thanks to Audra Marcantonio, the GWL SCA, and the LI Science Museum for bringing this hands-on, educational learning experience to the students of Glenwood Landing. Additionally, the LI Science Museum provided all of the GWL Landing kindergarteners with caterpillars to watch them change into beautiful butterflies!
