Hearty congratulations to the NSMS Viking Voice for winning the silver medal at the Columbia University Scholastic Press Crown Awards!

Our country’s commitment to journalism is a cornerstone of our democracy, and nowhere is that more important than in our public schools. Secondary school student paper and digital newspapers not only inform readers of vital current events, but also invite writers’ to actively engage in informed and objective civic discourse. Our students’ opinion pieces and informational articles showcase their skills at gathering and analyzing information, leveraging sound reasoning, and balancing competing evidence with the utmost of ethical standards. And their contests and Humans of NSMS section offer an engaging way to bolster our sense of community.
Ms. Vestuto, and her students, Stella Cashman, Luke Cardinale, Eva Dominguez, Marcus Fortugno, Sophie Leigh, Isaac Nisolo, Metta Pollio, and Sofia Tulumello, have made us very proud. We are humbled by their commitment to open-minded investigation, attention to detail, aesthetics, and truth-seeking, and of their talent for crafting words that resonate so clearly with those who hear them.
