The 2023 North Shore Schools T.E.N.S. Summer Program
Under the direction of Superintendent Dr. Chris Zublionis, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction, Dr. Carol Smyth, Director of Science Mr. Steve Menchel, and Director of Community Education Dr. Samantha Gesuele, the 2023 Talent Exploration at North Shore (T.E.N.S.) Summer Experience Program began on July 10, 2023. To the joy of over 130 North Shore children, the North Shore Middle School was filled with excitement as numerous outdoor and indoor activities began for our kindergarten through eighth grade students.
“We are excited to offer our North Shore Summer program for the fourth year!” said Superintendent Dr. Christopher Zublionis. “This program provides students with engaging classes and opportunities that reinforce academic skills, the fine and performing arts, athletics, and our North Shore Shared Valued Outcomes. Thank you to Dr. Smyth, Mr. Menchel, Dr. Gesuele, and our faculty members for organizing such a great experience! This is such a great example of how the North Shore Journey continues over the summer while combining the needs of our students and the feedback from our parents.”
Dr. Smyth stated, “It is wonderful to see our students so engaged in this unique T.E.N.S. summer program designed to support our students during their North Shore Journey while helping them further discover their interests and dreams.” She added, “We want to thank the following people for bringing the T.E.N.S. program to fruition this year: The members of our Viking Community subcommittee who worked to design the offerings; Mr. Steven Menchel and Dr. Samantha Gesuele who are organizing and leading the program; our North Shore faculty and staff who are facilitating and making possible the fun, interest-based, and engaging experiences; our custodians and security guards who are supporting the program; and our families who are making time for the students to spend part of their summers with us.”
This summer, over 130 students, in grades K-8, are happily participating outdoors and inside in a wide variety of fun and educational classes that fall under the following categories: Nature and the Outdoors, Learning Academy, the Arts, Gaming, and Sports! Numerous classes that appeal to many are offered to our young Vikings to keep them engaged daily during the summer program. They include multisports, STEM explorations, improv and theatre games, soap making, crocheting and knitting, basketball hot shots, backyard fun, game time, math blast, outdoor observations, drawing and painting, gardening, wild scientists, chess, competitive video gaming/eSports, write my own story, geocaching, track, and mindfulness – just to name a few! Sportsmanship, teamwork, and collaboration are also always emphasized and encouraged throughout the three summer sessions.
