NSHS WRITING CENTER FELLOWS TRAINING WORKSHOP
Seventh Cohort of NSHS Writing Center Fellows Attend Training Workshop
On Thursday, September 15, 2022, the NSHS Writing Center welcomed its seventh cohort of 12th grade Writing Fellows during our annual NSHS Writing Fellows Training Workshop. Selected as much for their empathy and compassion as their literacy prowess, our 14 student Fellows attended a comprehensive induction into Writing Center pedagogy, including the philosophy of non-directive tutoring, the North Shore High School Writing Center protocols and policies, and how to leverage questioning to foster critical thinking.
The full-day training session built our seniors’ capacity to serve as Writing Fellows by practicing research-based writing conferencing strategies and roll-playing a variety of tutoring scenarios. Working as a high school Writing Fellow is a profound experience. As our new tutors strive to empower their peers to engineer the tutees’ own writing evolution, our 12th grade Fellows will hone their own abilities, as well – both as writers and as leaders. The Writing Center teachers – Ms. Donnatin, Dr. Kirmser, Ms. Rice – and I congratulate them on achieving this honor and welcome them into their new role.
