Candidate
Dave Ludmar
Occupation: I am the owner and CEO of Hicksville-based Eiseman-Ludmar Co., where we manufacture quality uniform accessories for the military, public safety, airline, cruise line and hospitality industries. In 2006, after honing my finance skills and earning my master’s degree from the NYU Stern School of Business, I founded ELC Industries by purchasing the assets of a distressed supplier of braids and woven trimmings. We rebuilt our Rock Hill, SC manufacturing facility, and employ over 40 hard-working people between the two locations. Unlike so many manufacturers who have given up on America, we don't send our workers offshore - we send our products offshore to customers in Asia, Africa, South America, and Europe – as well as every corner of the USA. Running a business has its challenges - especially with airlines and cruise lines dormant post-9/11 and during the pandemic. We’ve prospered not by cutting corners or thinking small, but by offering unparalleled value and service, attention to detail, and cultivating a loyal, talented workforce. Business is not the same as education, but my extensive, successful experience at keeping an organization firing on all cylinders and ensuring that all stakeholders succeed and grow together, is an asset I bring to the Board.
Qualifications: After my 2016 election to the North Shore School Board, and becoming VP in 2018, I’ve served as your President the past two years. My unique and deep understanding of the LIPA predicament has been integral as I lead negotiations in our pending settlement and work with our elected officials to mitigate the impending revenue loss which will frame the work of this Board - and impact the community - in the coming years. After recruiting a superb Interim Superintendent, Dr. Dolan, I led the successful search for our next Superintendent, Dr. Zublionis. I oversaw the reopening of our schools for every day in-person K-8 instruction at the height of the pandemic, to the benefit of this community’s children, when 48 of 54 Nassau County Districts – and almost all schools nationwide – were shuttered. It was a major accomplishment, and my deep respect and appreciation for the teachers and staff on the front lines of this effort is clear. I have demonstrated the poise, temperament, and determination to lead amid unprecedented division, hardship, and loss on a scale none of us could have imagined.
My Board committee work includes Construction Steering, Athletic Policy, and Legislative Action – on which I had previously served. For several years I coached in the North Shore Softball League, which I also coordinated while serving on the Gold Coast Softball Board with neighboring communities. I am the current President of the GWL-GH Civic, a former College Admissions Officer, an active volunteer in the Athletic Booster Club, and a dedicated member of both the Arts Angels and SEPTA. My volunteering for the community began with my participation on the Guidance Review Committee, Superintendent's Council, and building the Outdoor Garden at GWL alongside an impressive group of Eagle Scouts.
Personal: I have lived in Glenwood Landing since 2005. My children attended Glenwood Landing Elementary and are current 8th & 9th graders at North Shore; they are well along their journey of learning, becoming critical thinkers, and identifying their strengths in the classroom, fields, and stage. I earned my BA at Vassar College and my MBA at NYU. My wife is a counselor, the daughter of a teacher and a law enforcement officer. We are both products of public K-12 education, which we see as the foundation of America's future and our democracy. I am a (very) avid Yankee fan, and we still find time to travel – both as a couple and as a family, including RVing and camping. These days I relax by splitting wood and playing cornhole with the great friends I’ve made in the community.
Statement: It is with a deep sense of purpose and determination to serve our community that I announce my candidacy for re-election to the North Shore Schools Board of Education. As your Board President during the most challenging period for public schools in our lifetimes, I have presided over community debate about the pandemic, curriculum, national politics, taxes, and school funding. It has not been easy, but our schools are operating at an elite level, achieving unprecedented national recognition, and focusing on the needs of each and every child. We now face another crisis: the settlement between LIPA and Nassau County, over a decade in the making. This will have a tremendous impact on our schools and community, and it is happening as we welcome a new Superintendent and District leadership team. This moment calls for experienced, proven, principled leadership, and I ask for your vote on May 17.
These are tough times with much economic uncertainty. If we are going to continue to thrive, ALL voices - students, residents, teachers and staff - must be part of a continuing, inclusive, transparent conversation about the direction of our schools. I will lead that conversation with openness and integrity, never wavering from my dedication to our kids.
I am asking you to support the budget and the great North Shore School district by giving me the opportunity to continue serving as its steward, building off the work of past generations and ensuring that it will be here for our children and grandchildren. I love this District and our community. I love cheering our students from the sidelines, applauding them on stage, reading what they have to say in the paper, and watching them rush into our buildings in the morning to be greeted by exceptional and caring staff. North Shore is a special place, and I am dedicated to ensuring its excellence. Please join me in this effort by re-electing me as your Trustee - and visit www.DaveLudmar4NorthShore.com for more information, or to join my campaign.
