NS Earth Science Students Learn How The Sun’s Position Affects the Length and Direction of Shadows
North Shore High School students in Ms. Laura DiLallo’s Earth Science classes went outside on a beautiful day during the third week of school in September to participate in a hands-on science lesson to measure the length and direction of shadows.
Ms. DiLallo said, “Today's observation was the first of our long-term investigation in astronomy over the next few weeks. We will be making direct observations once a week (at the same time of day) in order to see how the sun's position and seasonal changes affect the length and direction of shadows.”
All of Ms. DiLallo’s ninth graders used measuring tools including rulers and yard sticks as well as their calculator’s or cell phones to collect data on their observations and findings. In the next few weeks, they will continue to work in small groups to record their long-term investigations, collaborate with their peers, and communicate their findings to their teacher and classmates.
