8th Grade Group Exhibit Qualifies for National Competition
Three 8th grade students, Michael Granelli, Christian Holden, and Nicholas La Rosa, won first place at the New York State History Day competition in Cooperstown, NY! Their research project, entitled, “The Beginning of the End: The Triumph of D-Day,” triumphed over many excellent exhibits from all over New York state.
“After having placed as one of four finalists in the Long Island National History Day competition at Hofstra University in March, these students represented our school and community with pride, motivation, intellectual maturity, and poise as they presented their research and won first place in New York State,” said Principal Rob Dennis. They elevated their regional project by speaking with veterans and learning about their experiences and capturing new insights into their exhibit board. The judges at the competition were impressed with the deep level of knowledge they had and how they honored Veterans who served in World War II. “This exhibit is a fitting tribute to D-Day’s 75th Anniversary on June 6th. The first-hand interviews and original documents that these boys have uncovered share a personal history that reveals the true courage and triumph of our nation’s Veterans. This will be a truly memorable learning experience,” said, Director of Secondary Social Studies, Seth Gordon.
Michael, Christian and Nicholas will now prepare to compete at the National History Day competition at the University of Maryland, College Park. Between now and June they will spend time refining their already impressive work and meeting with their teachers to prepare for this endeavor. “We are so proud of Michael, Christian, and Nicholas. In addition, we are grateful to their social studies teachers, Mr. Dahill, Mr. Gill, Mr. Tloczkowski, Mrs. Brennan, and Mr. Ford and the rest of the dedicated staff who supported their work. None of this would have been possible without the support and dedication of their parents, and we are extremely grateful for their partnership with us,” said Principal Rob Dennis. Be on the lookout for additional information as well as an interview with the three winners in the local paper over the next few days. Good luck!
