32 MS Students Participate in Hofstra Univ. History Day

Three History Day Students Advance to the New York State Competition

On Sunday March 31st, North Shore sent 32 middle school students to participate in Long Island History Day at Hofstra University.   These selected students were winners of North Shore History Day competition on January 31st.  Mr. Gordon, Director of Secondary Social Studies said, "We are truly proud that that our students became historical researchers and learned many valuable skills that will benefit them in high school, college and beyond. The achievement of our students on History Day was remarkable!”

To prepare for this competition students interviewed college professors, traveled to many local history sites and used authentic primary source documents to complete their research projects.  The time students took to craft exhibit boards, documentaries and performances was exemplary.

While all students were excellent, four North Shore students won awards for their entries and three students will compete in the state competition.

Christian Holden, Nicholas LaRosa and Michael Granelli’s group exhibit titled, “Beginning of the End: The Triumph of D-Day” won 4th place in the regional competition and qualifies for state competition in Cooperstown, New York on April 29th.

In the special awards category, Rueben Shonik won the African American History Award for his paper on Ray Charles.
