North Shore High School Places in This Year’s Nassau County Comptroller’s Entrepreneurial Challenge

North Shore students Avery Goodman, Harrison Gillman and Isabella Barbetta received an honorable mention award in the Nassau County Comptroller’s Challenge this March. North Shore’s students created a fictional business plan and pitched their idea in a “shark tank” style before a panel of Nassau County judges.  Their business named “Advise” was centered around an App that solves the problem of organization in students’ lives by creating a customized, time-management schedule. 

The Challenge featured more than a dozen student-led teams from public schools across Nassau County.  The theme around the challenge was “Civic Innovation” where students were not only tasked to create a new business but also give back to the local communities.

Students enjoyed the competition and found it be a valuable learning experience. Charles Merlis was quoted in the Island Now News as saying, “It’s good to practice in front of people, being judged.”  Charles is interested in going to business and participated on a team that pitched SAT tutoring services for low-income families.  Seth Gordon, the Director of Secondary Social Studies and Business, said “real-life business experiences like the Entrepreneurial Challenge are what students need and this will help them become better communicators while also developing business acumen. We would like to think Ms. Sandback, Business Teacher, for developing of our business program and we would congratulate our student participants.”
