North Shore 6th Grade Is Making a Difference

Whale of a Difference

How You Can Make A Difference/Help Marine Life Everyday.

To help raise awareness for endangered humpback whales, Christopher Marinello, a North Shore sixth grader is trying to make a difference by making a pancake stack large enough to get in the Guinness Book of World Records. His Whale of a Difference Pancake Plight (story and research board)along with a tall, delicious stack of pancakes was showcased at North Shore Middle School on May 24, 2018 for everyone to see!

North Shore Middle School’s curriculum along with his studies and experiences have inspired Chris to try to make a difference in the world and take on a social cause. Chris was torn in the beginning and did not know what to focus on that would have a big impact since there are so many good causes and environmental issues in the world today. Through his extensive research, he discovered that whales are severely endangered and seemingly gain little public attention unless they wash up on our beaches. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said that humpbacks have been dying at an abnormally high rate since 2016 (as reported bythe Associated Press in May 2018).

Chris said, “Whales are my favorite animals and making pancakes with my family is one of my favorite things to do!” Chris decided to combine his two passions to make a difference! He is hoping to raise awareness for humpback whales by trying to beat the pancake stack world record of 3’ 4” held by Center Parcs Sherwood Forest (UK), in Rufford, Newark, UK. He broke the previous record held by chef Andy Wrobel, a 25-year veteran of Melbourne, Australia's,of approximately 2½ feet on February 8, 2016.

Christopher Marinello’s “Leaning Tower of Pancakes” looked at least 4½ feet tall! We wish him the best of luck as he embarks on this important cause. Chris concluded by thanking his family for all of their help and support and Ms. Aimee Canzoniero at North Shore Middle School. Good luck, Chris!
