Glenwood Landing Fairy Tale Ball
GWL 1st Graders Celebrate the Magical Fairy Tale Ball
At Glenwood Landing Elementary, first graders dressed up as characters in literature to become part of their favorite fairy tales including Cinderella, Goldilocks and The Three Bears, The Three Little Pigs, The Gingerbread Man, and Jack and the Beanstalk and many others! The students took to the stage in front of their families and peers, and sang songs beginning the celebration of the annual Fairy Tale Ball. This interdisciplinary event culminates numerous weeks of literary studies in folk and fairy tales as part of the English curriculum and also combines many interdisciplinary lessons in art and music. During the celebration, guests were invited back to each first grade classroom to further explore each of the children’s writing samples.
During the English study, first graders focused on story elements including: settings, story lines, characterization, and problems and solutions. Prior to the celebration, the first graders were taught all about the wonders of magic, repetition of words, rhyming, and happy endings. Additionally, under the direction of art teacher Lauren Vione, students created artifacts which were displayed in the hallways for everyone to see, music teacher LiJu Cheung helped with the various songs, and librarian Stephanie Smith encouraged all of her students to read, read, read!
Many thanks to all of the first grade teachers plus the parents, and families who helped make the Fairy Tale Ball such a wonderful success!
