Composer Erik Morales Conducts Workshop with the NS Middle School Bands
North Shore Middle School Symphonic and Concert Bands participated in a workshop with well-known Band Composer Erik Morales. Mr. Morales has composed best-selling music for many genres, including classical, jazz and pop, a trait which is rare among today’s composers. His many published works encompass a wide variety of styles and settings, including works for winds, orchestral, jazz and chamber ensembles and have been part of featured performances across the globe.
During the course of the day on January 11th, Mr. Morales worked with middle school students on his own music: Fable and Aztec. Mr. Morales, from Louisiana, was in New York to guest conduct the 2018 Nassau All County Band. As part of that performance, the All County band performed the World Premiere of Mr. Morales’ new piece Haywire. Through an arrangement with Mr. Morales, the North Shore Middle School Band will be the next to perform this extraordinary work at their spring concert in May 2018.
Reflecting on the experience, seventh grade percussionist, Ruben Shonik said “For me, the musical experience was remarkable. I will never forget it.” Band Director, Eric Mordhorst said, “This was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for my students, as well as myself. The opportunity to work with a composer on his own music cannot be overestimated. We all learned a great deal about music as a result.”
Mr. Mordhorst would like to thank the North Shore Arts Angels, without whose generosity, this event would not have been possible.
