Explore. Build. Discover.
Viking Explorers is a hands-on Long Island Studies course where students become scientists, engineers, and explorers. Using student-built underwater ROVs, students investigate the waterways and coastal environments that make Long Island unique.
On our recent trip to Tappen Beach, students explored the rocky shore by learning to pilot and ballast ROVs, using seines and nets to collect local marine specimens, conducting water-quality testing, completing a beach cleanup, collecting media for scientific documentation, and connecting their observations to our course text, The Outer Lands.
This is not a class where you just read about Long Island — you get outside, get your hands dirty, build real robotics, and explore it for yourself.
