Read a Good Book” - Message from Ms. Small

Dear Parents/ Guardians of Students of Glen Head, Glenwood Landing, and Sea Cliff Schools:
Good morning! I hope that you and your family are well.
Reading a good book can help your child enjoy these days at home.  To ensure that your child’s literacy growth continues during this time away from school, the single most important thing your child can do is to read every single day.
Have your child read for about an hour daily. It is fine to split that up into smaller chunks, especially for younger children for whom you will need to do so.  Take a look at the column on the far right of the “Reading Level and Volume Chart.” It provides guidelines on how many books your child will need per week to achieve an appropriate reading volume.  I also have provided links to resources from our local libraries and online sources, so that you may continue to access books and articles even if you are unable to leave your house.

In addition, every elementary school student in our district will have access to online books through a Raz-Kids account. Teachers are busily setting up accounts for students, and within a few days you will hear from your child’s teacher about how to access these resources. (If your child has had a Raz-Kids account in 2019-2020, the account is still active. If your child has not had an account since 2018-2019, your child will receive a new account.)
If your child reads every day, your child will not lose ground while away from school.
Read aloud to your child, too. It can be an enjoyable time together as parent and child, and research shows that when a parent reads aloud to his/her child, it helps the child become a better reader. Talk together about what you read. (Ideas for Possible Book Discussion Questions: )
Another simple idea is to have your child keep a journal. Someday, they can share with their grandchildren what their experience was like during the COVID-19 epidemic.
Your child’s teacher also will be posting assignments and helpful resources on Google Classroom.
Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions you may have. I will be checking my email regularly at Best wishes for your health and that of your family. I hope that we will be able to return to school soon.
